Meet Sierra Hood
2026 CTF LA Resident
Crafting the Future is excited to spotlight Sierra Hood, a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Los Angeles whose work explores identity, cultural memory, femininity, and nostalgia.

Rooted in her Japanese and Filipino heritage, Sierra — known to many as Sisi — draws inspiration from childhood memories, family traditions, and the cultural landscapes that have shaped her. As she describes it, her work is "an exploration of identity, memory, femininity, and the complicated beauty of belonging to multiple cultures." Living in Los Angeles as a Japanese and Filipino artist, she pulls from her personal history, childhood memories, family traditions, and the cultural imagery that has surrounded her throughout her life.

Sierra works across acrylic painting, mixed media, sculpture, textiles, and installation, creating vibrant, immersive works that blend bold color, playful imagery, and surreal forms with deeper explorations of belonging and personal history. Acrylic painting sits at the heart of her practice, while sculpture and
installation allow her to build environments that feel immersive, playful, and slightly surreal. She's drawn to taking familiar objects, symbols, and experiences and transforming them into something that exists between memory and imagination.
Her work often incorporates cultural symbols and objects associated with Japan and Hawai'i, reimagining them through a contemporary lens. Using bold color, exaggerated forms, pattern, and humor, she examines what it means to inherit a culture while also defining it for yourself.
Beyond the Studio
In addition to her studio practice, Sierra works in set design, prop making, and scenic painting, bringing her multidisciplinary approach to film, television, and other creative productions. Her practice is grounded in an interest in transforming everyday memories and cultural references into imaginative worlds that honor the past while creating space for new narratives.
An Act of Remembering
Ultimately, Sierra describes her practice as an act of remembering, reclaiming, and creating. She builds vibrant worlds where cultural history and personal experience can coexist with imagination — worlds through which she explores where she comes from, what she carries with her, and what she wants to leave behind.
Crafting the Future is proud to feature Sierra Hood as part of our community of LA-based craft artists.
